1957: Love in Seoul, S Korea
My grandfather was in the army, my grandmother had it made. She gave it all up when the idea of an arranged marriage disagreed with her, and she instead met Jimmy. Jimmy didn't ask her out; no, instead he told her he was picking her up one evening and that's how they started seeing each other. Ironic, really.
She never had to make her own bed before, never had to cook, and moved away to America with him and the one penny he had to his name. I'm hoping that last bit was an exaggeration, but he did grow up poor, so it's quite possible.
Here's my grandparents from 1957 in Seoul, South Korea, her birthplace. (Before and after photos for when I tried to fix it up a little)
Yong Ja Kim Stafford (Sept 19, 1938 - Mar 13, 2008) of Seoul, South Korea
James Edward Stafford (Feb 9, 1937 - Sep 19, 2012) of Staffordsville, Va, USA
She kept him in line and he kept her young. Jimmy worked at the post office for many years, and Kim was a seamstress. She later became a housewife and a mother. She learned how to make the bed with the corners tucked in just right, she learned how to cook both American and Korean cuisines, she sewed some of her family's clothes, she killed many a rose bush, and she even dabbled in painting.
